Modems
There are two types of modem, dial-up and broadband. Most
computers in the UK still use a dial-up connection to connect their
computers to the internet and these provide a 56kb/s (kilobytes per
second) connection to the world wide web.

Sound Cards
Most motherboards come with an onboard sound chip that will suffice
for most users, most even provide 5:1 surround sound. For those who
would like to turn their PC into their main stereo system they may
wish to install a hi-tech sound card to get the most out of their
sound system.

Printers
There is an almost limitless choice of printers but they fall into two
main groups, inkjet & laserjet.
Inkjets are the most popular because they give absolutely excellent
quality performance from plain text to full size photographic prints.
Laserjets are the more expensive option but could be justified by a
home user that is planning to do a lot of text printing, they are much
faster than inkjets.
A popular option is a combined inkjet printer & scanner which also
serves as a photocopier and sometimes a fax machine.
Pne of the main problems with inkjet printers is the cost of
replacement ink cartridges. Cartridges from manufacturers such as
Epson and Hewlett Packard in particular cost in the region of £25-30.
Printers supplied by the Cleddau Computer Clinic are usually Canon
models. Canon printers offer very good value for money and the most
economical entry level model, the Canon i250 cost just £3 to replace
each cartridge.
The reason so many computers come with a free printer is that
manufacturers are happy to give away a free printer knowing that they
will easily recoup their costs within the first year by the high cost
of ink replacements.
