Scanners
Scanners are a very handy peripheral to have. A basic model is a very
cheap addition to a computer system and can be used for scanning old
photos to add to your digital collection or to scan documents for
emailing to family, friends or customers.

Digital Cameras
A very popular addition to any computer system package. Throw away
your photo albums, scan your old photos onto your computer and arrange
them by date / event. Be VERY aware of the risk of losing them during
a serious hard disk failure. ALWAYS KEEP A BACKUP!
There are far too many thing to consider when buying a digital camera
to go into detail here but as a rough guide you should be looking at a
4 megapixel camera with a 4" LCD viewing screen on the rear side of
the monitor and although a digital zoom makes a camera specification
look as though you can zoom in on a far away target an optical zoom of
about x16 is preferable for good results.
A good quality set of Ni-MH rechargeable batteries along with a
charger is also a must for cameras that take regular batteries.

Other
Other popular additions to a computer system these days are :
Flash Card Reader
- Download your photos direct to your computer, no leads required.
Many flash card readers accept many different types of memory cards
from a whole range of hardware such as digital cameras and camcorders.
The unit itself is usually a separate USB device but you can also buy
a card reader unit that fits into one of the spare 5¼"
CD ROM drive bays on your computer case.
USB Memory Sticks / Hard Disk - Store up to 1GB of files on a
hard drive just a couple of inches long inside a plastic case with a
USB connection at the end. Keep it in your pocket, or on your key
ring, always have important files with you or carry a collection of
family pictures when you're on your travels. When using on Windows XP
machines, not even a driver file is required, XP just recognises it as
an extra drive making it perfect for transferring files from one
machine to another - tipped to replace the humble floppy disk in the
not too distant future.
Webcams
Very popular with chat room residents, put a face to the person
you are chatting to or use it within MSN / Yahoo / AOL Messenger
programs to view family who live in foreign lands.
Most webcams also double as a basic digital camera and allow you
to take photos and even short video clips. |
